Description:

This course examines Personality Disorders (PDs) described in diagnostic systems used by mental health professionals. We review psychodynamic, cognitive, and humanistic frameworks, with an emphasis on case conceptualization, diagnosis, assessment, treatment and empirical validation. Students compose NIH style grant proposals for PD-related studies to integrate material discussed throughout the course.

Learning Goals:   The objectives of this course are to introduce students to PDs from an array of theoretical perspectives. Empirical research and clinical writings on the etiology, dynamics, assessment, and treatment of each PD will be a focus of this course. Upon completing the course students will be able to:1. Describe major theoretical approaches to each PD2. Discuss clinical literature and empirical research related to PD etiology, dynamics, assessment, and treatment3. Draft NIMH grant proposals for the continuing study of PDs and other psychological syndromes
