Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:
- Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
- Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
- Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
- Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)
If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.
CHI 111: Chinese Level I
3 credits
Students learn through a communicative / participatory approach to the basic elements of the language, including listening, speaking, reading, writing and culture. (Learning Goals:G) (Learning Goals:G)
Learning Goals
By the end of the semester, students are expected to:1. To master hanyu pinyin, the phonetic presentation of the Chinese language.2. To master simple grammatical patterns and to apply them in communication situations.3. To be able to write short sentences in Chinese.4. To be able to do the following in Chinese:1) Greet people in Chinese2) Get acquainted and exchange names3) Talk about each others’ nationality and languages4) Talk about majors and courses in school5) Introduce people and ask someone’s possessions6) Introduce and ask someone’s family7) Ask and give phone numbers and addresses8) Make plans9) Make a phone call and handle various phone situationsThe students will be exposed to cultural information on various aspects of China, along with activities designed to develop students’ reading and writing skills.
