Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

• Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
• Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
• Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
• Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

SPE 112: Public Speaking

3 credits

The technical and practical aspects of public speaking, with emphasis on advanced theory and practice in writing preparation and speaking outlines, oral style delivery, presentation and evaluation of Persuasive and Informative speeches, in addition to listening, critical thinking and analysis. Learning Goals

PERFORMANCE OUTCOMES – based on the 6 goals of the Conceptual FrameworkThe student will be able to:• Understand the communication process and develop better research skills in preparation for public speaking, interviewing and discussion (scholarship)• Study the preparation and organization of speeches to be presented for different purposes (scholarship)• Study the techniques for purposeful and articulate delivery, relating to the purpose of the speech, the audience and the communication situation (scholarship)• Apply techniques and skills during impromptu speeches, assigned extemporaneous speeches to inform and to persuade (reflective practice, creativity/the arts)• Develop critical thinking skills for active listening and analysis of ideas to meet future communication challenges (reflective practice)• Understand and Develop evaluative skills
