Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:
- Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
- Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
- Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
- Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)
If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.
CHE 253: Organic Chemistry I
Lab
2 credits
Students carry out reactions that demonstrate techniques and the synthesis and conversion of the more important principal groups of organic compounds. There is one five hour laboratory.

• Demonstrate laboratory safety by following proper procedures• Compile a scientifically correct notebook byo Writing balanced reaction schemeso Converting between names and structures for the chemicals used during the semestero Computing the limiting reagent, theoretical yield, percent yield and percent recoveryo Listing physical constants and safety hazards for any chemical using appropriate books or online sources such as MSDS, Merck Index and Aldrich Handbook• Demonstrate organic chemistry reaction techniques byo Setting up and using a reflux apparatuso Performing an esterification reaction two different wayso Setting up and using an appropriate distillation apparatus (simple, fractional and steam)o Setting up and performing a vacuum filtration• Predict what solvents a compound will be soluble in and test the predictions by experimentation• Determine the appropriate solvent to extract and separate a compound from a mixture byo Predicting the layer (organic or aqueous) a compound will be most soluble in o Predicting and testing whether the organic or aqueous layer is on top• Purify a compound from a crude mixture by o Employing distillation methodso Employing sublimation techniqueso Employing column chromatographic methodso Employing crystallization (or recrystallization) techniques• Test identity and purity of compounds by o Measuring an accurate melting pointo Analyzing samples using the mixed melting point technique• Determine the composition of a mixture by using thin-layer chromatography • Determine the boiling point of a compound by using a distillation apparatus• Identify an organic compound byo Performing gas chromatography and analyzing the spectra for purity and relative identification o Obtaining the optical rotation of a chiral compound using a polarimetero Acquiring an infrared spectrum of a liquid compound and interpreting the spectrao Acquiring a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum for selected organic compounds and interpreting the spectrum
