Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.


NUR 389: Pharmacology I I

2 credits

Second part of an in depth study of the nursing management of patients receiving drug therapy. Students will gain knowledge necessary to administer safe and effective medication therapy for a variety of disease states. Biological, psychological, social, cultural, legal and ethical considerations during drug therapy will be explored.

Learning Goals

Upon completion of this course, the student will:1. Incorporate pharmacological concepts into an individualized holistic nursing care plan.2. Identify pertinent data to review prior to medication administration.3. Identify factors related to evaluation of patients’ responses to medication.4. Integrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology with the action of drugs at the cellular level.5. Develop a nursing care plan that integrates patient teachings and nursing considerations related to drug therapy.6. Formulate expected outcomes based on knowledge of drug therapy and patient history.7. Develop a plan to educate patients on drug therapy to promote patient autonomy.8. Discuss cultural factors that may influence a patient’s response to medications.9. Develop an appreciation for the impact of cultural factors in the care of patients using pharmacologic agents.10. Integrate evidence based data regarding drug therapy.11. Compare and contrast sources of information on drug therapy.12. Utilize hand held data retrieval devices (PDA /Smartphone) to ensure safe medication administration.13. Utilize web based technology to ensure medication safety and assess for drug interactions.14. Utilize information systems to assist in developing a plan for patient teaching.15. Identify nurses’ role in administration of drug therapy.16. Discuss ethical and legal obligations related to medication administration.17. Discuss importance of providing pertinent and accurate information regarding drug therapy to patients and families.
