Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:
- Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
- Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
- Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
- Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)
If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.
SPH 613: Advanced Anatomy,Physiology,
Neurology Of The Speech
Mechanism
3 credits
Detailed study of the anatomy and physiology of the peripheral speech mechanism; basic neurology; and the neurological bases of speech and language disorders (e.g., dysphagia, dysarthria) of adults and children.
Learning Goals
PERFORMANCE OUTCOME: Students will be able to• Understand the anatomical/physiological terms in relation to respiration, phonation, articulation/resonation and neuroscience • Understand the organization and function of the different regions of the nervous system with a focus on their relations to communication (ASHA III-B: knowledge of basic human communication and swallowing processes—assessed by labeling of drawings and exam grade)• Understand the processes of speech/language by integrating knowledge of anatomy/physiology of the respiratory, phonatory, and articulatory/resonatory, and nervous systems. (ASHA III-B: knowledge of basic human communication and swallowing processes—assessed by labeling of drawings and exam grade)• Apply the knowledge of normal/abnormal neuroanatomy/neurophysiology in the analysis of communicative disorders (ASHA III-C: knowledge of the disorder– assessed by grade on exam).
