Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

CHE 498: Guided Research In Chemistry

1 - 3 credits

Students will read primary scientific literature, perform experiments in the research lab, and write up the results of their research at the end of the semester. This course is designed to be taken every semester they do research.

Learning Goals

After successful completion of the course students will be able to:Demonstrate lab safety by following proper proceduresCompile a scientifically correct notebook byRecording amounts of reagents usedRecording experimental proceduresOrganizing quantitative data in the form of tables and graphsRecording qualitative observationsDesign a protein purification and/or characterization protocol byIdentifying and reading appropriate literature articlesSelecting and optimizing techniques based on the composition, structure, and function of the proteinDemonstrate protein purification and/or characterization techniques byPreparing buffers, reagents, and other solutionsUsing tissue homogenization and cell sonication as appropriatePerforming centrifugationPerforming column chromatographyUsing concentration filters and dialysisPerforming SDS gel electrophoresisPerforming total protein assays using a UV–vis spectrophotometerPerforming NMR-based enzyme activity assaysPerforming NMR-based ligand binding assaysCharacterization the structure of a protein using NMR techniquesPractice effective scientific communication skills byPreparing and presenting a poster presentation describing their proposed project at Chemistry Seminar Preparing and delivering a PowerPoint presentation describing their project at Chemistry Seminar, Adelphi Research Day, and at least one external venueWriting a comprehensive report describing their research formatted either as an Honors College thesis or for publication in Biochemistry

*The learning goals displayed here are those for one section of this course as offered in a recent semester, and are provided for the purpose of information only. The exact learning goals for each course section in a specific semester will be stated on the syllabus distributed at the start of the semester, and may differ in wording and emphasis from those shown here.
