Course Search

Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

MUH 223: History Of Western Music III

3 credits

This course focuses on the styles and trends of music from the Romantic era through the 20th Century. Seminal composers and their works will be studied within the context of their socio- historical framework. (Learning Goals:G)

Learning Goals

Students will learn to recognize and categorize styles and schools of musical practice and to contextualise these within a society rapidly evolving through unprecedented periods of dynamic scientific discovery; reassessment of religion: industrial revolution; the rise of the middle classes and empowerment of lower social orders through Revolution and radical restructuring of the nature of society. The course will enable students to use appropriate musicological language in discussing the evolution and categorization of musical style, to compare and contrast various genres, and to demonstrate technical familiarity with a variety of musical developments.
