Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:
- Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
- Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
- Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
- Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)
If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.
NUR 388: Pharmacology I
2 credits
First part of an in depth study of the nursing management of patients receiving drug therapy. Students will build a foundation to administer safe and effective medication therapy. Pharmacological concepts emphasized will include safe calculation of drug dosages, as well as biological, psychological, social, cultural, legal and ethical considerations. (Learning Goals:Q)
Learning Goals
Upon completion of this course, the student will:1. Incorporate concepts of pharmacology into a holistic nursing care plan.2. Determine appropriate nursing assessments for clients using selected pharmacologic agents.3. Formulate specific nursing diagnoses for clients using selected pharmacologic agents.4. Articulate holistic nursing interventions that promote patient safety for individuals using selected pharmacologic agents.5. Use informatics, research data, and other resources to formulate a plan of care for patients using medications.6. Analyze ethical issues inherent in the holistic care of clients using medications.7. Incorporate critical thinking skills when calculating medication dosages.8. Discuss psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural aspects in the care of clients using selected pharmacologic agents.9. Explore current evidence related to pharmacologic effects of drugs.10. Discuss technology and information system safeguards related to medication administration i.e. patient identification systems, drug alerts and bar coding and electronic medication administration systems.11. Discuss behavior consistent with the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses and ANA Scope and Standards of Practice as it relates to pharmacologic therapy.12. Describe current legal regulations and agencies governing care of clients using selected pharmacologic agents.13.Articulate a plan of education for the patient regarding drug therapy.14. Explain the importance of collaboration with other members of the health care team to ensure safe medication administration.
