Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.


NUR 763: Advanced Pharmacology Across The Lifespan

3 credits

This course focuses on the pharmacotherapeutic use of medications for primary health care management by advanced nurse practitioners. Emphasis is placed on the critical thinking process used to prescribe drugs in the management of illnesses. Core concepts include pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacotherapeutics across the lifespan, health related information and medication compliance.

Learning Goals

1. Demonstrate proper techniques for advanced nurse practitioner prescription writing and verbal transmission according to current Federal and New York State laws and regulations.2. Analyze the relationship between pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles to effectively predict a drug’s effect on overall physiologic response with lifespan considerations.3. Classify and differentiate the general indications and mechanisms of action of various pharmacological agents.4. Interpret the concepts and potential for drug-drug interactions and adverse drug reactions.5. Describe and discuss principles of pharmacotherapeutics for use in the management of specific acute and chronic disease states across the lifespan.6. Apply critical thinking, research data, nursing informatics, and other resources to describe the pharmacotherapeutic management of primary health care methods.7. Develop a body of advanced nursing pharmacological knowledge enabling one to manage the primary health care of selected patients.8. Design an individualized lifespan appropriate pharmacologic treatment plan for a given patient with specific disease state(s) based on the most current evidence based treatment guidelines.9. Display clinical skills necessary for self-directed lifelong learning in order to improve therapeutic outcomes in patient and public health.10. Discuss New York State mandatory prescribing education regarding pain management, palliative care and addiction.
