Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:
- Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
- Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
- Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
- Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)
If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.
PUB 576: Social And Behavioral Issues
In Public Health
3 credits
Students will focus on the etiology of public health problems from a socio-ecological perspective. Concepts such as social capitol, social identity, social networks, discrimination and religion are addressed as social factors that close or contribute to health disparities. Theoretical underpinnings are illustrated in health promotion and disease prevention interventions.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to:- Relate health theories to the socio-ecological model of health- Differentiate structural interventions; including media, culture, economic, policy, accessibility and availability models that are utilized to improve population health- Identify social aspects (social identity, social capitol, social networks, social support, discrimination) that can determine states of health and illness. - Analyze how culture, religion and/or community can be utilized in public health interventions.- Analyze physical components of place that determine health behavior and health status.- Critique and present journal articles that exemplify social determinants in public health interventions
