Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:
- Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
- Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
- Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
- Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)
If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.
PUB 600: Policy Aspects Of Health Care
And Public Health
3 credits
Students will examine the organization, structure, and function of public health policy in the United States. Relationships between healthcare coverage, access, cost, and quality are investigated, emphasizing health equity and ethics. Stakeholders' roles and strategies in policymaking are explored as students develop coalitions and participate in a mock legislative hearing.
Learning Goals
a) Compare the organization, structure, and function of healthcare, public health, and regulatory systems across national and international settings b) Discuss multiple dimensions of the policy-making process, including the roles of ethics and evidence c) Propose strategies to identify stakeholders and build coalitions and partnerships for influencing public health outcomes d) Advocate for political, social, or economic policies and programs that will improve health in diverse populations.e) Evaluate policies for their impact on public health and health equity f) Apply negotiation and mediation skills to address organizational or community challenges. g) Communicate audience-appropriate public health content both in writing and through oral presentation h) Interpret the relationships between healthcare coverage, access, cost, and quality and those characteristics' influence on the U.S. healthcare system. i) Evaluate the positions and interests of health professionals, providers, payors, consumers, and other stakeholders advocating for and shaping U.S.
