Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.


HIN 603: Clinical Decision Support Systems And Evidence-Based Practice

3 credits

This course prepares students for state-of-the-art clinical decision support systems. Four main domains are addressed: evidence-based decision making for knowledge generation; issues in representing knowledge; organizational, cultural, legal, and ethical issues in designing, using, and evaluating clinical decision support systems; and applications of clinical decision support systems used in healthcare.

Learning Goals

Upon completion of this course, the graduate student should be able to: 1. Describe the steps required to manage information during the patient-clinician interaction.2. Explain the difference between observations, findings, syndromes, and diseases.3. Describe various types and structures of clinical decision support systems.4. Describe the elements of the "classic paradigm" of the clinical process.5. List the major types of factors that clinicians consider when devising a management plan for a patient's condition, in addition to the diagnosis and recommended treatment.6. Explain what is meant by the "hypotheticodeductive" reasoning process.7. Discuss the historical challenges in implementing clinical decision support.8. List the different information structures or formats used to organize clinical information.9. Define the key tenets of evidence-based medicine and its role in the culture of health care.10. Understand evidence-based medicine applied to the other key clinical questions of diagnosis, harm, and prognosis.11. Describe how to implement evidence-based medicine in clinical settings through clinical practice guidelines and decision analysis.12. Discuss computer provider order entry systems (CPOEs) and clinical decision support systems (CDSS).13. Discuss the benefits and limitations to summarizing evidence.
