Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.


EBE 511: Methods Of Teaching Literacy & Native Language Arts

3 credits

Examine the integrative instructional practices incorporating the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Native Language Arts, as they transition to proficiency and academic knowledge in English Language Arts.

Learning Goals

• Analyze theories of how students can achieve bi literacy.• Become familiar with the New York State Native Language Arts Standards.• Learn the components of a balanced literacy approach, and examine ways to differentiate literacy instruction to teach listening, speaking, reading and writing in multiple languages to bilingual learners.• Become familiar with a wide number of examples of multicultural and international literature.• Adapt mainstream literacy activities so that they are culturally and linguistically appropriate for specific populations of bilingual and ESL students.• Describe approaches for literacy instruction for specialized populations of linguistically diverse students including older students with limited formal schooling, students in dual language programs, and students with grade level proficiency in their native language who are transitioning to English reading.• Use varied genres of text and multiple reading response strategies in their classroom.
