Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:
- Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
- Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
- Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
- Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)
If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.
EEC 540: Introduction To Autism
Spectrum Disorders
3 credits
An introduction describing the range of cognitive, behavioral, social and academic issues of individuals with autism, Asperger Syndrome, and related disorders. Topics include: theories of cause and development, diagnosis, education and therapeutic interventions, psychosocial adjustment, IEP development, multi-disciplinary teams, and working with the family. 10 hours of fieldwork required.
Learning Goals
COURSE OBJECTIVES: In this course, students will have the opportunity to develop a knowledge base in the following areas:1. The social and behavioral science based understanding of Autism and related disorders including Autism, Asperger Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Delays2. Current theories of causation and surrounding controversies3. Historical context of these conditions4.The process of identification and diagnosis5.The psychosocial and educational needs of individuals on the spectrum6.Description and evaluation of educational, medical and psychological interventions7.The IEP process and IDEA entitlements 8.Working with interdisciplinary, instructional teams9. Understanding the human perspective Working with parents and families
