Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:
- Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
- Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
- Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
- Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)
If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.
HED 610: Health Prep For Teachers
1 credit
Explore health issues such as chronic and communicable diseases, puberty, HIV/AIDS, tobacco, drugs, alcohol, nutrition, physical fitness, child abuse and abduction, mental health and violence. Satisfies NYS mandate in violence prevention, child abuse and substance abuse.
Learning Goals
Upon completion of this course, students will: 1. Cite and discuss the need for comprehensive health throughout a child’s educational experience. 2. Identify the main components of the school health program and their relationship to a child’s health. 3. Discuss the concepts of wellness, prevention and risk reduction and their relationship to health behavior. 4. Demonstrate a knowledge base in the following health content areas: nutrition & physical fitness, chronic & communicable diseases, HIV/AIDS, tobacco, alcohol & other drugs, mental health and stress, child abuse, neglect & prevention and violence prevention, including bullying and NYSED Project SAVE and The Dignity Act. 5. Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between health knowledge and health behavior. 6. Devise learner-centered teaching strategies in health education including research, analysis and reflection assignments. 7. Explain concepts and definitions basic to teaching health education: health, wellness, illness, disease, health risk factors, protective factors, health behavior, healthy lifestyle, and levels of protection.
