Course Search


Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.


PED 380: Physical Education In The Elementary School

3 credits

An overview of elementary physical education curriculum, grades P-6. This course includes specific techniques, methods and materials, in addition to field experiences in public schools.

Learning Goals

Objectives: As a result of successfully completing this course, the students will be able to (TSWBAT):1. Define and give examples of the movement concepts/skill themes curriculum model. 2. (TSWBAT) identify critical elements of motor skill performance and combine skills into appropriate sequences to facilitate learning. 3. Design and conduct developmentally appropriate movement/fitness activities for preschool and elementary age children. 4. Identify, describe, and develop appropriate movement activities for children.5. List the characteristics of and techniques used to establish a positive learning environment. 6. Identify strategies for reducing inappropriate behavior and disciplining children. 7. Define the Generic Levels of Skill Proficiency and use this approach to assess students' skills and select tasks that match each level. 8. Use assessment strategies to evaluate children's physical, cognitive, and affective development. 9. Write and design practical and effective lesson plans, for movement concepts and skill themes, following the Adelphi University Department of Physical Education format. 10. Design an abbreviated unit plan of instruction for movement concepts. 11. Successfully demonstrate effective teaching skills with preschool and elementary children. 13. Develop one set of materials directed at the elementary physical education content in the academic classroom (common core); special needs population and assessments.14. Reflect on and evaluate teaching skills, set goals, and make improvements on teaching skills.
