Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.


SPH 670: Research Methods In Communication Sciences And Disorders

3 credits

After taking this course, students will be educated consumers of research.  They will study ethics of research with human participants; learn about and produce components of a research study and research design; and conduct in-depth critical evaluations of professional journal articles.

Learning Goals

PERFORMANCE OUTCOMESUpon completion of this course students will demonstrate;1. An understanding of ethical practices in research (ASHA- III-E). This will be assessed by the completion of an online course in research ethics and certificate of completion.2. Ability to critically evaluate the research literature in a specific areas within the discipline of speech-language pathology, speech science and/or audiology. (ASHA- III-F) Assessed by student written and oral reports.3. To review pertinent practice literature in a given area of interest (ASHA-III-F). Assessed by written and oral reports.4. To develop a design for a research project which will add to the evidence based practice in that area. (ASHA- III-B, D, F). Assessed by completion of a comprehensive written proposal for research in a specific area of interest.
