Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:
- Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
- Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
- Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
- Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)
If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.
ELY 750: Assessing & Addressing
Literacy Needs I
3 credits
This course will concentrate on assessment of reading and writing ability with the purpose of enhancing literacy instruction for all learners. Both formal and informal assessment strategies will be examined. Students will work with individuals at various ages who are struggling readers and writers.
Learning Goals
COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: 1. Candidates will examine diverse approaches to literacy disorders, both qualitative and quantitative, and the implications for instruction.2. Candidates will become familiar with various literacy assessments and the evaluative function each provides, including the New York State Assessments and English Regents Comprehensive Examination.3. Candidates will learn the mechanics of administration of an Informal Reading Inventory, the interpretation of the results, and the implications this has for instructional planning.4. Candidates will consider the impact of factors affecting literacy development, including: physical, emotional, environmental, sociocultural /socioeconomic, and cognitive.5. Candidates will learn the craft of professionally written reports that identify and analyze the results of the literacy assessment.
