Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.


ENG 416: Advanced Playwriting

3 credits

This is an advanced playwriting workshop intended for graduate and upper level undergraduate students with some experience in playwriting. (Distribution Reqs:Arts)

Learning Goals

GEN ED LEARNING GOALS: N/ADISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS: ACOURSE LEARNING GOALS:1) Students will master the writing process by- learning elements of craft through class lectures and discussion- discussing elements of craft in assigned readings- creating and developing drafts of original texts of dramatic writing- revising texts through class discussion and individual consultation with professor- engaging in critique of their colleagues’ work in class2) Students will master literary tools by- employing close reading skills- learning, developing, and employing dramaturgical skills- describing, analyzing, and employing literary terms3) Students will master literary prose by- demonstrating an understanding of vocabulary, concepts, and theatrical techniques- developing clearly defined theses through discussion, application of artistic processes, and critical thinking- creative writing, employing appropriate grammar, discipline-appropriate formatting, and proofreading4) Students will develop collaborative skills by- engaging in the “workshop” process of engagement, development, and response- thinking like theater artists through the three-dimensional conceptualization of dramatic texts
