Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:
- Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
- Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
- Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
- Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)
If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.
NUR 387: Introduction To Professional
Nursing Practice
2 credits
Students will explore and discuss the profession of nursing and the roles of the professional nurse in the changing healthcare environment. The nurse patient relationship, professional values and ethical behavior, and effective inter-professional communication are emphasized.
Learning Goals
Upon completion of this course, the student will: 1.Describe and discuss nationalpatient safety and quality initiatives and the role of nursing in formulating and implementing these initiatives 2. Explain the importance of quality improvement concepts, processes and outcome measures in nursing practice. 3. Describe role of nurses in providing patient care which emphasizes health promotion and disease prevention at the individual and population level. 1. Discuss nursing theoretical frameworks as a foundation for caring and respect for the uniqueness of human beings. Discuss the importance of cultural competence/ awareness and sensitivity and its impact on patient care.  Evaluate approaches to care in order to maintain respect for diversity.  Identify the impact upon healthcare that is created by stereotyping, cultural blindness, cultural imposition, culture conflicts and cultural responses to health and illness.Discuss the role and participation of nurses in safety and quality research and risk reduction.  Identify current changes within the health care environment.  Utilize knowledge from nursing, humanities, sciences, and the arts as a basis for understanding and implementing a definition of nursing care.  Explain levels of prevention and host agent environment as they apply to Discuss the uses of information technology as a tool to improve patient care and promote interdisciplinary collaboration.Discuss the components of the ANA code of ethics for nurses and ANA scope and standards of practice.  Discuss the image of nursing in society and the effect of this image on professional nursing practice.  Differentiate between professional organizations.  Identify the potential impact of nurses on the transformation of healthcare to a safer and more cost effective system.  Compare the roles and perspectives of the nursing profession with other professions on the healthcare team. Discuss effective communication techniques and their effectiveness with patients, families, and members of the interdisciplinary team.
