Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.


PMH 501: Mental Health Counseling One

3 credits

This course is a central course in the new master's program in counseling and psychotherapy. The course outlines the central concepts and theories of counseling and psychotherapy, providing the student with a basic understanding of important therapeutic themes and approaches in the field.

Learning Goals

The student will learn how counselors have come to conceptualize the critical psychological and interpersonal components of an effective counseling relationship and will have opportunity to try out those skills in role playing situations.Students will gain an understanding of the variety of empirically and clinically tested counseling interventions that have been identified, and will learn for which clients and problems each intervention is best suited. Finally, students will have the opportunity to formulate and to try out the application of these interventions in exercises in class
