Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.


SPY 601: Psychodynamic Perspectives In Working With Children

3 credits

The course will review core psychodynamic concepts and their application in working with children and adolescents. Students will explore the usefulness of psychodynamic concepts in offering consultation services in schools, and in conducting psychotherapy and play therapy sessions in residential or early intervention schools.

Learning Goals

This course aims to prepare you to:1. use psychodynamic concepts to understand a child’s behavior and raise hypotheses about the child’s emotional state and coping mechanisms2. become aware of transference and countertransference dynamics in working with children and in consulting with parents and teachers3. observe a child’s play and behavior and identify the child’s relational patterns, coping mechanisms and ability to reflect on his/her experiences4. understand the therapeutic properties of child play
