Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.


SWK 332: Bsw Practice I: The Process Of Generalist Social Work

3 credits

Students prepare for effective social work practice by developing knowledge, values and skills appropriate for the profession. This is the first foundation practice course and must be taken concurrently with Field Practice I.

Learning Goals

1. Identify as a professional social worker and conduct oneself accordingly. Practice behaviors consist of:a. Advocate for client access to the services of social work;b. Practice personal reflection and self-correction to assure continual professional development;c. Attend to professional roles and boundaries;d. Demonstrate professional demeanor in behavior, appearance, and communication;e. Engage in career-long learning; andf. Use supervision and consultation.2. Apply social work ethical principles to guide professional practice. Practice behaviors consist of:a. Recognize and manage personal values in a way that allows professional values to guide practice;b. Make ethical decisions by applying standards of the National Association of Social Workers "Code of Ethics" and, as applicable, of the International Federation of Social Workers/ International Association of Schools of Social Work "Ethics in Social Work, Statement of Principles";c. Tolerate ambiguity in resolving ethical conflicts; d. Apply strategies of ethical reasoning to arrive at principled decisions.3. Apply critical thinking to inform and communicate professional judgments. Practice behaviors consist of:a. Distinguish, appraise, and integrate multiple sources of knowledge, including research-based knowledge, and practice wisdom;b. Analyze models of assessment, prevention, intervention, and evaluation; c. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication in working with individuals, families, groups, organizations, communities, and colleagues.4. Engage diversity and difference in practice. Practice behaviors consist of:a. Recognize the extent to which a culture’s structures and values may oppress, marginalize, alienate, or create or enhance privilege and power;b. Gain sufficient self-awareness to eliminate the influence of personal biases and values in working with diverse groups.5. Respond to contexts that shape practice. Practice behaviors consist of:a. Continuously discover, appraise, and attend to changing locales, populations, scientific and technological developments, and emerging societal trends to provide relevant services.6. Engage, assess, intervene, and evaluate with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Practice behaviors consist of:a. Preparing for action with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities;b. Displaying empathy;c. Developing a mutually agreed-on focus of work
