Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.


SWK 780: Advanced Social Work Practice With Individuals In Family Contexts

3 credits

This course is grounded in the psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral and family systems approaches, and in the systems perspectives that undergird a contemporary direct practice concentration. Students will gain knowledge and skills needed for advanced clinical social work practice with individuals in a family context and within an organizational setting.

Learning Goals

1. Practice on an advanced clinical level with clients with varied problems, in a variety of social work settings2. Conduct and utilize differential and in depth biopsychosocial assessments3. Apply knowledge of human diversity, and its impact on clinical social work practice with individuals4. Include individuals’ capacities in areas of competence in assessing, developing and implementing interventions5. Demonstrate knowledge of the psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral clinical approaches, and the ability to integrate these approaches according to the needs of a given client6. Use the self purposefully and ethically within the professional relationship in accordance with social work values7. Demonstrate skill in critically assessing and applying evidence based knowledge as part of advanced practice with individuals.
