Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.


SWK 882: Comparative Approaches To Social Work Research: Qualitative Methods

3 credits

This course is designed to help students develop knowledge, skills and comfort with qualitative research methods, as an additional alternative in social work research. Discussions address ontological, epistemological, axiological, rhetorical and methodological aspects of the qualitative approach to research and applications relevant to social work and social welfare.

Learning Goals

1. demonstrate understanding of philosophical and historical context of qualitative research;2. be familiar with basic assumptions of the qualitative research paradigm as it compares to the quantitative paradigm;3. develop their ability to select a research topic, formulate research questions, choose an appropriate sampling strategy, collect and analyze data, and write a research report;4. demonstrate sensitivity to issues in interviewing across cultural and social boundaries;5. develop understanding of approaches for gaining access, empowering and emancipating participants in the interview process and using the data as a tool for change;6. acquire knowledge of salient professional and ethical issues in conducting qualitative research;7. develop knowledge of major traditions of qualitative research.
