Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

Students will explore the musical and cultural developments associated with Hip-Hop in the United States from the early 1970s to the present. Students will gain knowledge and appreciation of rapidly-evolving musical trends that propelled these genres to international popularity to become an enduring cultural influence. Learning Goals:   Key learning outcomes of this course include:1. To investigate the musical characteristics, technological developments, and sociopoliticalissues associated with evolution of Hip-Hop.2. To understand the music as both impetus for and function of social awareness regardingissues of urban development, racial inequality, politics, and commercialism.3. To develop a methodology for analyzing the music in a meaningful way.24. To understand the role Hip Hop played in the development of contemporary American popular music.5. To satisfy Distribution Requirement A.
