Students learn to render detailed botanical, zoological and biological illustrations using a variety of media. This course is a fusion of art and science, exploring the many aspects of scientific illustration, and the technical and aesthetic skills for creating publication-ready works in the Biological Sciences. Learning Goals: |
After successful completion of this course, students will have a thorough understanding, knowledge, skills, and competency of Scientific Illustration regarding methods, techniques and applications used to effectively communicate a scientific concept, as well the polishing of skills needed to initiate and successfully complete publication ready illustrations. Students will have the strong foundation on which to build on if they choose to pursue a career in Scientific or Medical Illustration. Goethe has been quoted as observing that you really do not see a plant until you draw it (Arber, A. 1946. Goethe's Botany. Chronica Botanica, 10, 63-126). Students will learn to see with a more observant and critical eye, focusing on the important and pertinent, and making the right choices as to what media and style will best depict the specimen under study. *The learning goals displayed here are those for one section of this course as offered in a recent semester, and are provided for the purpose of information only.
