Description:

This foundation course explores three-dimensional form in space through a series of practical assignments using a variety of materials and processes. Fundamentals of 3D Design examines the structural principles that underlie sculpture, model building, and other three dimensional artwork. (Distribution Reqs:Arts)

Learning Goals:   This hands-on studio course will introduce students to three-dimensional design (the sculptural object) in a variety of media and techniques through demonstration, discussion and practice. We will cover various sculptural principles with an emphasis on the three dimensional applications of line, plane and mass exploring fabrication, modeling, construction, carving and assemblage. Beyond the constraints of specific assignments you will each be creating distinct works of art and we will critique and discuss them as they operate as art objects in our broader culture. This course is designed to help you develop your three-dimensional observational skills and the application of a variety of sculptural media. Each assignment will be explained through demonstration and presented examples to help prepare you to make informed artwork. In order to accomplish this you must be willing to listen, ask questions, take instruction and most importantly spend focused time producing your projects. Quality artwork takes a great deal of time to produce as you will make and often remake things to express you intended ideas and designs. Learning will take priority over production, in that although it is unlikely you will produce masterpieces this semester you will all be thoroughly introduced to the fine art practice of sculpture and the complex application of three-dimensional design to all the fields of visual art.
