Description:

Life processes are studied to develop an understanding of structures and functions of the human body. Major topics include: the cell, tissues, human anatomy and physiology, and the use of the scientific method to evaluate information as it relates to health and selected diseases. (Distribution Reqs:Natural Sciences)

Learning Goals:   Goals of the course: Buy the end of this course the students should be able to: • Apply the scientific method to understand basic biological concepts. • Compare normal cell structure and function to that of an abnormal cell. • Contrast normal with abnormal anatomy and physiology of body systems and understand how this results in the development of sickness and disease. • Relate the cell organelles and metabolic processes to weight management. • Understand how common lifestyle practices like smoking, alcohol, drugs, diet, and exercise play a part in the development of disease processes. • Access reputable websites (e.g. CDC) to investigate specific disease entities. • Apply scientific method to critical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills to understand the structure and function of the human body and the development of disease.
