Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

Combinatorial games are two-person games in which chance has no part (like Chess, Go and others). They boast a fascinating theory involving new kinds of numbers. Play lots of games, and try to determine how to win and what properties make them fun to play. Design your own combinatorial game. (Learning Goals:Q;Distribution Reqs:Mathematics,Computing & Logic)

Learning Goals:   This course will likely be different than any mathematics course you have taken previously. This is not a lecture course, butinstead a course where you will actively explore mathematical games. Most of your time in class will be spent working throughthe text in small groups. I will play a limited role, serving to facilitate and guide from the sidelines.Each topic that we cover will roughly follow this structure. You will read about the topic before we begin and be prepared toanswer questions about the readings. After we have discussed the readings, you will work through a series of problems in smallgroups. As we go through the problems, we will take breaks for classroom discussion of some of the problems, with each grouppresenting its work and ideas. After we have thought about and discussed the problems in class, they will be assigned forhomework, which is your opportunity to present your ideas and work formally.
