Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

Students will trace the history of Musical Theatre from its beginnings in the early Baroque period up to and including 20th and 21st century productions. Representative works from different style periods will be examined in their socio-cultural contexts, with an emphasis on current trends on the Broadway stage. (Distribution Reqs:Arts)

Learning Goals:   The music-dramatic literature of opera is one of the great artistic and intellectual achievements of Western civilization. The literature of American musical theater represents American culture's unique and most significant contribution to world drama. As we focus on representative examples of opera and musical theater, students will begin to understand how music is used to convey dramatic narrative, illuminate character, and enlighten an audience. Attention will be given to the connection between opera/music theater and the social context in which it is created. As the world and its people have changed over the past 400 years, so has the music drama which is created and performed within it, and this connection will be explored and discussed as a fundamental component of the course. Included in this discussion will be aspects of sociology, philosophy, moral and ethical development, religious and political thought.By the end of the semester, students will be able to:1. Analyze a work of opera or American musical theater in terms of musical form and expression.2. Analyze a work of opera or American musical theater in terms of drama.3. Combine both perspectives into a coherent understanding of specific masterpieces in the literature and into a comprehensive understanding of the various genres, including opera seria, opera buffa, operetta, verismo, and musical comedy.
