Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

Students will study the guitar as a common denominator in the world’s diverse (in some cases, largely marginalized) musical traditions. Students will analyze guitar music, including flamenco, Irish traditional music, jazz, rock and blues styles, in guitar cultures of Europe, North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Learning Goals:   Students will:1. analyze, by example, the significance of the guitar as a common denominator across the globe (Study Guide Questions, Essay Exams);2. appreciate and describe, in writing assignments, the integral role that the guitar has played in the development of different styles and genres (Study Guide Questions, Essay Exams);3. recognize and differentiate among individuals emblematic of particular guitar idioms and/or community-oriented approaches to the instrument (Study Guide Questions, Essay Exams); and 4. develop critical thinking and reasoning skills through writing while learning the significance of collaboration and leadership within the scope of global guitar cultures (Study Guide Questions, Essay Exams, Term Paper).
