Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

Introduces production and operations management, the business function responsible for creating goods and services. In recent years, the scope of production management has broadened considerably. Production concepts and techniques are now being applied not only to manufacturing concerns but to a wide range of service industries. These include health care, food service, recreation, banking, hotel management, retail sales, education, transportation, and government. This course examines the design and control of systems needed for the efficient use of materials, human resources, and equipment. It also discusses allocation of financial resources, facilities, and information in the development of competitive products and services.

Learning Goals:   Course Goals: Upon completion of this course, the successful student will be able to• Identify current trends in business that impact operations management• Discuss and compare organization strategy and operations strategy, and explain why it is important to link the two• Compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative approaches to forecasting• Explain the strategic importance of product and service design• Describe and use techniques that apply to decision making under three different environments under which operations decisions are made• Identify the determinants of quality• Describe and use various quality tools• Explain how control charts are used to monitor a process, and the concepts that underlie their use• Describe and solve the three basic inventory models• Identify global issues in supply chain management• Identify the strategic, tactical, and operations issues in supply chain management• Discuss the behavioral aspects of projects in terms of project personnel and the project manager
