Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

A sequence of courses designed to engage students in progressively higher level critical thinking and clinical decision making. Through a case-study approach, students integrate and apply nursing knowledge and skills using clinical scenarios. Cases focus on content consistent with co-requisite nursing theory courses, building on previous knowledge.

Learning Goals:   1. Analyze case based patient scenarios by organizing assessment data, formulating nursing diagnoses and determining appropriate evidence-based nursing interventions.2. Develop organizational and prioritization skills when planning nursing care.Utilize informatics and multiple data resources to plan holistic nursing care for patients using case studies.3. Formulate appropriate nursing diagnoses which reflect an understanding of pathophysiology, pharmacology, medical management and nursing management.4. Demonstrate critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills when formulating and implementing a plan of care.5.Discuss personal influences on the ability to deliver care to patients.6. Recognize cultural and personal influences on the patient’s views and responses to health, illness, and plans of care.7. Plan evidence based care that reflects patient and family preferences with an emphasis on safety and quality; citing sources of evidence for planned interventions.8. Incorporate best evidence and best practices in planning care using case studies.9. Discuss uses of information technology as a tool for communication when analyzing case based patient scenarios.10. Demonstrate behavior consistent with the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses and ANA Scope and Standards of Practice.11. Describe and apply ethical and legal considerations relevant to the holistic care of clients.12. Compare the roles and perspectives of the nursing profession with other healthcare professionals.13. Use professional communication skills and collaboration with other students to plan evidence-based, patient-centered care.
