Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

Students will explore the nature of health through a human rights perspective, analyzing critical problems in public health, access to medicine, and health-resource allocation in the US and other countries.

Learning Goals:   Demonstrate knowledge of the basic covenants on human rights and their implications for health.Identify the key principles of human rights as they apply to the health sector. Explain nation-states’ obligations and mechanisms to protect and promote human rights within the health sector.Describe the human rights implications of specific policies and strategies for prioritizing health interventions, including impact on the poor, children, prisoners, and other vulnerable populations.Formulate a strategy for low-income countries to address equity in the accessibility of medications and medical care.Describe international and local response mechanisms, including assessment reports, commissions of inquiry, special task forces, treaties, and local legislation, to assist victims of violations of human rights around health or health care. Analyze strategies to monitor the application of human rights principles in the health sector.
