Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

Students will learn biological, socio-cultural, behavioral, analytical, and transtheoretical approaches to understanding and treating substance use disorders. Prevention, assessment, and advanced intervention strategies are considered in work with individuals, groups, families, and the self-help network.

Learning Goals:   • identify the signs and symptoms of substance use disorders• discuss the biological, psychological, and social etiology of substance use disorders• describe the biopsychosocial assessment and treatment alternatives for substance use disorders• peruse the research regarding differing treatment models so as to critique, select and combine them appropriately• compare and contrast a spectrum of models of etiology and intervention, finding commonalities where they exist• understand substance use disorders and prevention from cross-cultural, developmental, gender-specific, and age-specific perspectives• recount the history of drug abuse legislation in the United States, and its influence on current policy• articulate the family and community ramifications of substance use disorders
