Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

This course is designed to teach art and psychology majors the fundamental principles of visual perception as it applies to the creation and aesthetics of visual arts, as well as the psychology of creativity and theoretical approaches to the topic. Students will create projects related to this material.

Learning Goals:   - Students will become familiar with the nature of visual perception, color and brightness perception, depth perception, color and brightness perception, depth perception and face perception.- Students will gain a knowledgeable and an appreciation of artists using these principles in creating art works.- Students will use these principles to create their own studies and ultimately art work embodying and exemplifying these principles.- Students will be able to critique works of art in terms of composition; use of color and luminance; creation of form and depth; edge movement patterns of the viewer; symbolism; psychology of the artist; and cultural context.- Students will gain an understanding of the psychology; the major theoretical positions; the supporting data and demographics; and the factors which enhance or inhibit creativity.- Students will gain the ability to view the world with and aesthetic perspective.General Education Learning Goals: Adelphi University has 6 Learning Goals for general education (i.e. in addition to the specific learning goals of the particular class). Those learning goals briefly are: Artistic Understanding and Expression, Quantitative Reasoning, Global Citizenship, Information Literacy, Critical and Integrative Thinking and Communication. In this course it is expected that the student will increase his or her critical and integrative thinking skills especially in understanding complex systems; in addition students when writing papers will be demonstrating information literacy, and communication skills. While global citizenship is not a formal part of the course, it is hoped that sensitivity to this topic will be enhanced. Finally, it is of course expected that students will show enhanced artistic understanding and expression.
