Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

This course will cover body image disturbances; body-related affective problems; anorexia nervosa; bulimia nervosa; binge eating disorder; obesity; socio-cultural pressures; dieting; and mood problems. For each of the four eating disorders, we will review causal models, as well as prevention and treatment approaches.

Learning Goals:   Upon completion of this course, students will:1. List DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and obesity2. Discuss the etiology and prevalence of eating disorders and obesity3. Describe important characteristics of each disorder4. Understand the relationship between body image problems and disordered eating5. Describe current treatment models of eating disorders and obesity6. Understand the dynamics of eating disorders within the family7. Critically discuss current controversial issues around eating disorders and obesity8. Appreciate how ethnic and cultural factors impact the development of eating disorders 9. Apply knowledge to case studies10. Conceptualize cases and formulate treatment plans for case studies involving eating disorders based on the effectiveness of current modes of intervention and prevention within a treatment team11. Describe the co-occurring psychological disorders such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders, attachment disorders, personality disorders and the treatment considerations typically associated with eating disorders12. Understand how trauma and the dimensions of culture contribute to the development of eating disorders, as well as body image disturbances13. Acquire a basic understanding of nutritional counseling and nutritional education in working with those with eating disorders 14. Understand the development and growth of those diagnosed with eating disorders throughout the life span
