Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

This course introduces students to different approaches and techniques for conducting behavioral and social research with an emphasis on experimental, quasi-experimental, and survey and field research methods.

Learning Goals:   The primary learning goals of the course are: 1. Students will learn the basics of conducting and evaluating empirical research, both qualitative and quantitative2. Students will learn to write a research proposal for an empirical study3. Students will learn how to critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of already published pieces of research. They will become familiar with terms like internal and external validity, correlation, causation, types of reliability of measurements, etc.4. Students will further learn about different research designs, sampling techniques, and statistical tests used for different types of data5. Students will learn about ethical issues in conducting psychological research6. Students will learn the basics of SPSS: how to enter data, how to modify data, how to conduct various statistical analyses, and how to report findings.
