Description: |
This course explores contemporary views of Autism Spectrum Disorder and its clinical manifestations from childhood through young adulthood; focusing on psychopathologies including psychotic states, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and personality disorders. Attention will also be paid to differential diagnosis, and distinguishing the range of symptoms in all of these diagnoses; and the effects of the interaction of comorbid diagnoses in schools, families and clinical settings. |
Learning Goals: |
At the end of this course, students will be able to:• Understand the defining characteristics and diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) • Understand the defining characteristics and diagnostic criteria of the various comorbid psychopathologies that may occur along with ASD• Understand the interactions of ASD and comorbid psychopathologies, and how those can affect the individual, in both diagnostic and clinical treatment terms • Understand differential diagnoses, according to the DSM-5, and be able to identify the nuances among diagnoses• Examine and understand the intricacies of complex diagnoses, and apply that knowledge when writing treatment plans *The learning goals displayed here are those for one section of this course as offered in a recent semester, and are provided for the purpose of information only.
