Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

This course will develop an understanding of how psychotropic drugs operate as well as how medications alter nuerochemical functioning. The cases of side-effects and drug interactions will also be presented. Finally, the process of getting FDA approval for new medications will be discussed.

Learning Goals:   The primary learning objectives of the course are to:(1) Explain basic concepts of neuroanatomy, neurobiology, and neurochemistry(2) Understand basic Psychopharmacology and pharmacokinetics.(3) Learn about the pharmacological treatment of:a. Psychotic disordersb. Mood disordersc. Personality disordersd. Substance Abuse disorderse. Dementiaf. Anxiety Disordersg. Sleep/Eating/Attention Disorders(4) Understand problems related to medication adherence(5) Understand cultural, ethical, and legal issues related to psychopharmacological treatment of mental and emotional disorders.(6) Understand the risks and signs of addiction to medications.
