This course will focus on assessment and clinical evaluation of the full spectrum of substance use disorders. Application of assessment and clinical evaluation findings will be made to treatment planning, case management, psychotherapy, discharge planning, and clinical record keeping. |
Learning Goals: |
THE OVERALL GOAL IS FOR STUDENTS TO DEVELOP BOTH A KNOWLEDGE BASE AND SKILL SET TO BE APPLIED IN THE EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE WITH A BROAD RANGE OF PATIENT POPULATIONS WITH CO-MORBID PSYCHIATRIC CONDITIONS. STUDENTS WILL BE MORE COMPETENT AND CONFIDENT IN THEIR ABILITY TO ADMINISTER AND DIAGNOSTICALLY EVALUATE SUBSTANCE-ABUSING PATIENTSUPON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE: 1.GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF ABUSED SUBSTANCES AND THE VARIOUS WAYS TO CLINICALLY EVALUATE PATIENTS USING THE DIAGNOSTIC INTERVIEW AND OTHER ASSESSMENT TOOLS 2.KNOWLEDGE OF ASSESSMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA (DSM-V) FOR SUBSTANCE-USE DISORDERS 3.COMPETENCIES TO ADMINISTER, SCORE, AND INTERPRET VARIOUS ASSESSMENT TOOLS SUCH AS THE SASSI AND MAST. 4.KNOWLEDGE OF WAYS TO UTILIZE TEST DATA (E.G.
