Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

This course will focus on the specific ethical principles and general knowledge of professional issues that guide sound clinical practice.

Learning Goals:   Upon completion of this course, you will have demonstrated knowledge of:1. The Canon of Ethical Principles for the Certified Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselors (CASAC),2. Legal and ethical issues within the counseling profession, with a specific understanding of issues pertaining to addiction counseling,3. Professional issues and standards of CASACs.4. Ethical principles concerning confidentiality and limits of confidentiality5. Boundaries and therapeutic relationships in treatment of addiction6. Ethical principles governing the addiction treatment with women, children and adolescents7. Ethical considerations when working with families and significant others of those in addiction treatment8. Forensic issues in addiction treatment9. Legal and ethical issues in the provision of services in the internet era10. Cultural and spiritual dimensions of addiction counseling11. Ethics of treating individuals for addiction along with co-occurring psychiatric and/ or medical issues.
