Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

The purpose of this course is to review the various psychological theories of criminal and aggressive behavior, and to provide students with an understanding of the origins and etiology of psychopathy. Theoretical viewpoints from psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, cognitive, behavioral, social learning, and developmental psychologists will be discussed. A general overview of special topics such as psychology of incarceration, juvenile offenders, gangs, serial murder, antisocial personality, and sex crimes and how they relate to the explanation of criminal behavior will be addressed.

Learning Goals:   The primary learning objectives of the course are:1. In general, the objective of the course is for students to have both a conceptual understanding of the criminal mind and a familiarity with the specific descriptive, phenomenological characteristics of the various viewpoints on the etiology of psychopathy. 2. Students will learn specific techniques utilized in the process of criminal profiling. 3. Based on a conceptual understanding of the criminal mind and its etiology, students will be able to identify differential specific characteristics associated with a variety of different criminal behaviors. 4. When presented with a specific case, students will be able to utilize and access the information they have gained in order to create a profile in a specific criminal situation.
