  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

This course provides an overview of research methods and psychological assessment in clinical psychology. We will examine the basics of devising and conducting observational, experimental quasi-experimental and qualitative studies. We will also discuss methods of interpretation, ethics involved in conducting clinical studies and psychometric concepts.

Learning Goals:   The primary learning objectives of the course are: 1. Understanding of the strengths and limitations of different research methodologies (i.e. quantitative and qualitative; efficacy and effectiveness) and sources of information. 2. Acquiring foundational knowledge of psychometric theory underlying frequently used measures (e.g. reliability and validity.) 3. Developing the tools to critically evaluate empirical research and relevant literature (discriminate solid an relevant research/articles from others). 4. Ability to design appropriate methods of data collection in local clinical settings and ability to carry through (collect data and analyze it) own research projects. 5. Developing skills to identify personal biases that impact the design and implementation of research and application of research findings in clinical settings. 6. Knowledge of ethical principles in research and ability to evaluate research with respect to conformity to ethical standards.
