Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

Students will learn key concepts in working with adolescents. Students will be assigned to a case and receive supervision by a faculty member. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the challenges involved in reaching adolescents with a wide range of learning and emotional difficulties and establishing a therapeutic alliance.

Learning Goals:   In this course, students will:1. Have a good understanding of the conflicts children and adolescents who are referred for treatment often display2. Be able to initiate techniques to establish a therapeutic alliance 3. Be able to analyze coping styles and the experiences of children and adolescents for the development of a treatment plan4. Have an understanding of how adolescents from different ethnic and social backgrounds experience themselves and the struggles they face as they try to cope with social and institutional demands5. Be able to initiate therapeutic techniques with children and adolescents who are struggling socially or emotionally and be knowledgeable of the services that are being available to students from different ethnic and social backgrounds.
