This course will address the ethical standards governing the counseling profession using examples from ethical issues encountered by counselors in professional practice. |
Learning Goals: |
For students to be able to respond to ethical dilemma through a decision making process. For students to understand his or her value system and understand how these values will impact counseling practice. Students will be able to identify different components of ethical codes and laws for professional counselors.-understand the difference between law and ethics- learn about the role of ethic codes in making ethical decisions- understand how the six moral principles can be applied to ethical dilemmas-appreciate the role of counselor self-awareness in ethical practice-clarify how countertransference can be an ethical concern-explore client dependence as a potential ethical problem-examine how stress can lead to therapist impairment and develop a strategy for maintaining vitality-explore ethical issues involved in imposition of therapist values-differentiate between exposing and imposing of therapist values-explore the role of spiritual/religious values in counseling-examine end-of-life issues from an ethical perspective-learn how to effectively address value conflicts- identify how cultural encapsulation is an ethical issue- examine ethical codes from a diversity perspective- examine cultural values and assumption in therapy- explore ethical issues pertaining to sexual orientation- examine what is involved in multicultural competence- learn what is involved in informed consent- develop and informed consent document-examine a counselor's responsibility regarding record keeping-become familiar with ethical issue in working with minors- examine the basis for malpractice liability- learn practical strategies for risk management - differentiate between confidentiality and privileged communication- understand the purpose and limits of confidentiality- differentiate between duty to warn and duty to protect- evaluate ethical and legal duties pertaining to suicide- identify some confidentiality issues in the area of AIDS/HIV counseling- examine various perspectives on multiple relationships- formulate ways to minimize risk and promote client welfare- differentiate between boundary crossing and boundary violations- explore the pros and cons of bartering and receiving gifts- identify what ethics codes say about specific dual relationships- examine legal and ethical aspects of managing boundaries- identify how one's theory pertains to ethical practice- learn about ethical issues involved in using techniques *The learning goals displayed here are those for one section of this course as offered in a recent semester, and are provided for the purpose of information only.
