Course Search


Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

Focus on the literacy specialist as an instructional leader and build an understanding of the issues, choices, procedures and requirements for the creation of exemplary literacy programs. Gain professional development skills that support teachers and paraprofessionals in maintaining and increasing the effectiveness of their instruction.

Learning Goals:   1. Promote the development of a literate environment that fosters interest and growth in all aspects of literacy.2. Discuss reading with parents, administrators, students, and other stakeholders. 3. Discuss student advocacy and the professional role of the reading specialist.4. Recognize the importance of creating literacy programs to address the strengths and needs of individual learners.5. Learn to communicate with students about their strengths, areas for improvement and ways to achieve improvement in literacy domain.6. Learn to communicate with allied professionals and paraprofessionals in assessing student achievement in and planning instructions for literacy development.7. Demonstrate ability to communicate information about literacy and data to administrators, staff members, school-board members, policy-makers, the media, parents, and the community.8. Demonstrate skills and motivation to communicate research findings to colleagues and the wider community.9. Pursue knowledge of literacy by reading professional journals and seeking out information of professional organizations and conferences.10. Reflect on one’s teaching to improve instruction and other services concerning literacy development to students.11. Increase working knowledge of special education legislation (e.g., parental rights, IEP, IDEA) as pertaining to all students.
