Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

This course addresses social studies education for children, engaging students in the reflective exploration of interdisciplinary study in the social sciences disciplines through the framework of critical literacy and pedagogy. Highlighting multicultural, equity, and ethical issues, students are challenged to create curriculum for compassion and social justice. Field hours required.

Learning Goals:   Course Goals and Objectives1. To develop an understanding of the meaning and role of the social studies within the context of the other curricular disciplines.2. To develop pedagogical skills related to questioning, leading discussions, creating activities (projects, lessons, simulations, writing products, etc.) direct instruction, and cooperative learning.3. To develop familiarity with the forms of assessment used in evaluating student learning in social studies and critical thinking. 4. To develop the organizational skills necessary to plan effective instruction (including lesson plans, instructional units, etc.)5. To develop appreciation for the effectiveness of an integrated interdisciplinary curriculum and familiarity with the strategies to do so.
